Let Purdue TAP/MEP Help Change Your Culture!
Once upon a time, change was a "top down" process. Employees were simply told what to do, when to do it, and how to make it happen. And they continued to do "it" for a long time.
But "Lean" has come onto the scene and is altering that approach, transforming not only processes, but company culture as well!
Manufacturers and folks in the service industry agree: Culture and Change Management are key to shifting from a "do it because I was told to" to a "do it because I want to" way of business. And that shift includes how employees work; their attitudes towards work and change; their relationships with one another AND management; and the way change is introduced and embraced.
People can become value-added problem solvers - part of the solution rather than part of the problem – if only they understand why change is necessary and how to embrace it. They can improve a company’s bottom line, sustain results and continue to improve the processes, thus creating a high-performance enterprise. BUT understanding change is key to this entire process!
Successful Lean organizations spend 20% of their time on technical applications (using lean tools and techniques) and 80% transforming their people. They know that you can’t make someone change. You have to show them WHY change is necessary. And you have to show them in their own terms – because they all come with different basic behaviors; they communicate differently; and they have different values. Understanding HOW they can be a part of the bigger picture, involving them in decisions that affect their jobs or departments, and organizing teams around value streams help to answer the "what's in it for me" question. Once they understand how change benefits them, there’s a buy-in throughout the organization. And it’s much easier to shift the paradigm when it becomes a "do it because I want to" culture.
Purdue TAP/MEP offers a workshop on Culture/Change Management that shows how organizational culture can greatly influence the many facets of daily productivity and improvement. If you’re interested in learning more, give us a call at 800-877-5182.
